April 5-May 17, 2023 once a week for six weeks through the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program: The Children’s Picture Book Writers’ Bag of Tricks: A Six-Week Workshop to Juice Up Your Writing ~ Chock full of short and longer in-class writing exercises, this workshop is designed especially for children’s picture book writers. By focusing on recurring subjects such as “Tell the Truth,” “Less Is More,” “Quote-Unquote,” and “The Power of Observation,” you have the time and creative space to delve into a range of fresh approaches to these universal themes as you engage in stimulating writing exercises and constructive give-and-take with your instructor and peers. In addition to inspiring new work and ways of seeing, this workshop will loosen up your tight fists, unwrinkle your worried brow, and remind you how satisfying and fun writing can be. All writing and critiquing is performed in class; you are given the opportunity to read your work aloud if you wish.

Friday-Sunday, January 10-12, 2020…Picture Books from A to Sea ~ presented by SCBWI California Central/Coastal.  I’ll present four sessions during the weekend; two other published picture book mentors, Rebecca Langston-George and Barbara Bietz will be there to offer guidance, encouragement and answer your burning questions about writing, picture books, agents and more. You’ll have time to write, join others for small group critiques, stroll on the beach, gather each evening for a beach side campfire, play life-size chess/checkers and visit the elephant seals. Workshop taught by Teaching Authors April Halprin Wayland, Carmela Martino, Esther Hershenhorn, JoAnn Early Macken, and Mary Ann Rodman.  Two magical, amazing and very smart professors from DePaul University-Roxanne Owens and Marie Donovan-introduced us and moderated our workshop, called
Flabby to Fab-y: Writing Workouts to Shape Up Your Curriculum.

As “personal trainers,” we warmed-up, stretched, strength-trained, cardio-ed and cooled down the attendees…and then awarded them tres cool certificates of completion to hang on their walls with pride.  And yes…we really did teach them one actual physical exercise!  In the break-out sessions we taught hands-on writing exercises.
